Content Optimization: Elevating Marketing with Human Thought Leadership

Sasha Hanzha

In the content optimization race, overlooking the human touch in marketing is a grave mistake.

What does thought leadership mean?

Thought leadership is a strategic content marketing approach. It positions individuals as an authority in specific industries. Thought leadership is about providing unique human perspectives, opinions, unique insights, and challenging conventional norms, where applicable and appropriate.

Human Thought Leadership Versus Content Optimization

We live in an age of repetitive, homogenized content. In trying to scale their content marketing programs, brands are using AI to generate content. The results are bland and generic. On the contrary, thought leadership content stands out with its original and sometimes contrary viewpoints.

Balancing Content Optimization and Human Expertise

While AI tools can aid in content creation, human expertise should be center stage. AI can work well for data analysis and initial drafts, but the depth and creativity of human insight are irreplaceable and should not be handed off to AI.

Augmented Experts Opinion: Maximizing Content Optimization While Utilizing Human Industry Thought Leaders

With the proliferation of AI-generated article content saturating the Internet, the individual value of ghostwritten content diminishes, and it becomes harder and harder for companies to sustain ROI targets for their content marketing programs.

People are so tired of reading the same opinions and news regurgitated repeatedly by generative AI and legions of bloggers who lack any depth of skill, experience, or expertise on the subject matter in which they write.

A focused male individual, likely a professional or executive, closely examining sticky notes that are presumably affixed to a transparent surface or wall. His engagement with the task suggests a brainstorming session or project planning, common activities in business settings where content optimization strategies might be discussed.

How can marketers adjust their content marketing programs?

When programmatic content’s value rapidly approaches zero, something must stand out. That ‘something’ is branded expert content.

When we say human insight is, well, as valuable as gold, we’re not exaggerating. Google predicted that with the rise of AI, the internet would be flooded with generic content. That’s why Google’s ranking guideline E-A-T (Expertise – Authority – Trustworthiness) was modified with an additional E that stands for Experience(E-E-A-T), which was adopted late in 2023.

If your content is solely AI-generated and lacks human expertise, Google will not rank your website well.

No ranking = No visibility. No visibility = no authority, no customers, and no profit.

The Content Optimization with AI Problem

Obviously, for businesses, content marketing scalability is a huge topic. Many suggest using AI for research and other easily automatable tasks.

The problem is that prompting AI to do what you want isn’t that easy. You need to feed it a lot of high-quality data and train your writing team to prompt AI efficiently.

The Problem of Thought Leadership

Thought leadership content cannot be researched by a generalist writer. It comes from experience acquired over the years; it also requires deep domain expertise.

The lack of available deep industry expertise is a problem most marketing teams face today. The few subject matter experts (SMEs) in their company don’t have the hours of time needed to create insightful content, let alone do it multiple times each week.

So, what marketers do is that they turn to freelance generalist writers, either directly or through an agency. Here is where the problem emerges: generalist writers can’t give the same level of insight as SMEs.

At the same time, dedicating SMEs to content asset development is cost-prohibitive for all but the largest enterprises.

Surrounding this focal point are various related terms and icons that suggest digital marketing elements, such as feedback, business, media, and the internet.
